Writer Resources

Publishing and writing tips:
Proper formatting when submitting short stories: Sometimes it’s good to just get back to the basics.
A good search engine for literary magazines: Trying to get published? A lot of publications listed here.
Plot structure, feat. Freytag’s triangle: An interesting video about different plot structures. A good place to learn terminology.
Submittable: Some publications will only accept submissions through this site.
Duotrope: One of the best sites for finding a home for your work. A bit expensive, but worth it.
Newpages: An excellent guide for locating active publications.
General Critique Guidelines: A helpful article with advice about how to effectively present, and receive, criticism.
Poets & Writers: Another subscription site, but a great magazine.

Some Helpful Books for a Writing Library:
These are my personal recommendations. This list is not affiliated with the group. If you have any favorites pass them along and I will add them to the list.
Writing Fiction, Tenth Edition: A Guide to Narrative Craft. Janet Burroway.
A Poetry Handbook. Mary Oliver
Understanding Show, Don’t Tell: And Really Getting It. Janice Hardy.
Writing Fiction: The Practical Guide from New York’s Acclaimed Creative Writing School. By Gotham Writers’ Workshop.
Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print. Renni Browne and Dave King.

Some great places to take online workshops and writing classes:
Grub Street: Boston, MA.
Pioneer Valley Writer’s Workshop: Northampton, MA. A very helpful and supportive group of people.
